Revival in the Church did not come entirely or even primarily by the initiative of the monarchs. Nor, at the outset, was it from the movement which was associated with Cluny. In the first half of the tenth century, as we have seen, Gerhard as founder and abbot of a monastery at Brogne, south of Namur, in what is now Belgium, was the outstanding pioneer of an awakening which spread through much of Lotharingta, a territory which was roughly the region of the Rhine Valley. Futile search for purer origins, the theological motivation behind this, and specific problems drawn from historical criticism ('reliable' oral material, the shaky hypothesis of Ezra-Nehemiah) - and I will draw these together a little later. Although the main impression is that Bloch searches for the pristine texts of protest, he does allow that later usage may render a text subversive.40 That is to say, apart from the production of these texts as slave talk, their usage also comes into play. Thus, certain texts may take on a new life when reread, such as those of Balaam (Numbers 12), whose mix of curse and blessing becomes a means for cursing the local lords while apparently blessing them. The Meaning Of Baptism

One of the reasons for baptism by immersion is that going under the water symbolizes our going into the grave - associating us with the death of Christ, and indicating our 'death' to our previous life of sin and ignorance. Coming up out of the water connects us with the resurrection of Christ, relating us to the hope of resurrection to eternal life at his return, as well as to living a new life now, spiritually triumphant over sin on account of Christ's victory achieved by his death and resurrection.

Mission and Personhood

For Balthasar the mission is in each case the specific way in which the person can become conformed to Christ. The discovery and acceptance of one's mission, of which we shall say more below, is an ongoing lived process of conversion in obedience. In temporal existence it involves the continuing death of the self-centered and sinful personality concomitant with growth into new life. Mission is not extrinsic to personal existence, as its goal or end-point rather, it is the center out of which Christian life is lived. It is, however, an ex-centric center, given in Christ and hence not commensurable with any purely immanent project of self-realization. A life lived in accordance with mission is a holy life, and holiness is best defined as the fulfillment of mission (see Balthasar 1988-98 III, 263-82).

Discrimination by Public Facilities

In Kern County, California, the County Parks and Recreation Department charged religious groups-mainly Christian church groups-an hourly fee to use a county-owned facility, while allowing other community groups to use the structure for free. New Reformation Revisionist Protestantism 19601990

During the 1960s, Western society underwent a series of convulsions that called the settled assumptions of the past into question with unprecedented vigor. It was as if there was an unrelenting impatience with the ways of the past, a sense of dissatisfaction with existing ideas and values, and a strong belief that a new beginning lay just around the corner. The cultural mood of the period is caught well by Tom Wolfe in his essay The Great Relearning.11 It was all about sweeping everything aside and starting all over again, following a Promethean and unprecedented start from zero. Perhaps a clean sweep appealed more to the imagination than to the reason but it certainly captured the mood of the moment.

Actuality

The final two parts of the system deal with questions concerning our actuality. Actuality is Tillich's technical ontological concept of concrete life - life is the 'actuality of being.' Essence designates one main qualification of being, taken in abstraction from any particular life in its concreteness. Existence designates the other main qualification, also taken in abstraction. Actuality refers to your life precisely in its concrete uniting of essence and existence.7 This is a key point. Uniting is a process, the process of actualizing potentiality or essential nature (here Tillich borrows from Aristotle). It is the dynamic process-character of actuality that makes it alive, a life. Nephilim (Strong's 5303 from 5307 to fall) probably means fallen ones in reference to these heavenly beings who fell physically and spiritually. God is working out His Plan of Salvation for all in biblical Ages. No person who dies as an unbeliever is lost forever because the Word of God assures us that all people, without exception, will be made alive in Christ in God's time and order. Death is the enemy of man, but paradoxically it is also the gateway to new Life in Christ. Everybody must experience two deaths, before he or she is ready to enter the Kingdom of God. The Second Death, in the Lake of Fire, awaiting all unbelievers when they face the Great White Throne Judgement is the spiritual death of their 'old man'. All resurrected unbelievers in their immortal yet still unsaved bodies will have to experience the Second Death in God's consuming, refining and merciful Lake of Fire judgement. All unbelievers must die the Second Death in order to be born again with new Life in Christ to enter the Eternal Kingdom of God.

Regeneration

Five facts concerning the nature of regeneration need to be stated (1) a new life has been thereby begotten which is eternal (2) that life is the divine nature (3) the believer is begotten by the Spirit (4) God the Father becomes his legitimate Father (5) therefore, all believers are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. On the human side, regeneration is conditioned simply on faith (John 1 12-13 Gal. 3 26).

It speaks of the new life imparted by the Holy Spirit at their new birth which is a motivating energy, providing both the desire and the power for believers to live a godly life in Christ. Becoming a Christian

Making a Christian was perceived in both internal and external terms. On the one hand, following the legalization of Christianity, when the profession of Christian faith could no longer lead to potential torture and execution, Christian devotion became an increasingly internalized matter. Public profession of faith was imagined to reflect a profound inner orientation to God that eclipsed all other loyalties. Even a man or woman who had been raised in a Christian family might therefore value an experience of conversion, a radical turning away from the old life and embracing the new life of Christian dedication. The circulation of conversion narratives in this period provided an important (if often overly idealized) touchstone by which to measure this internal reorientation of the self.

Eschatology

Christian hope, for Moltmann, is thoroughly Christological, since it arises from the resurrection of Jesus. His famous claim that from first to last, and not merely in the epilogue, Christianity is eschatology, is hope (Theology ofHope, p. 16) was possible only because it was a claim about the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus. They know you have the anointing they have seen the hand of God upon you they have seen the miracles that are happening in your life and naturally compare them to the way things are slipping away from their kingdom. Inspiritation

The basic message of the Gospel which you are learning is therefore the true power of God if you allow it to do so, it can work in your life to change you into a child of God, showing the spirit mind of God to some degree in this life, preparing you for the change to God's spiritual nature which will come at Christ's return (2 Pet.1 4). Paul's preaching was in demonstration of the spirit and of power (1 Cor. 2 4).

The Day Of The Lord

There is an old saying that it is always darkest before the dawn. Certainly, it was a dark day and a darkened end to an age when Jesus was crucified. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me MAT 27 45 46 But, out of this darkness - within a period of fifty days - the earths of His disciples were bathed in fire and a new beginning of an age of enlightenment was begun.
