The Authority of the Bible

The Bible is the infallible Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit. God inspired all of the 66 books of the Bible in the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek languages. In Chapter 2 we outline the Christian believer's attitude towards the Authority of the Bible.

Some Universalists want to pick and choose which parts of the Bible to accept and which parts to reject because they cannot reconcile God's love with His judgements. They reject and 'deconstruct' many parts of the Bible because they cannot accept that God who is merciful and loving would destroy the whole of Noah's world, Sodom and Gomorrah, all Egyptian first born and order the killing of men, women and children in the cities of Canaan etc.

The Bible says a lot about God's judgements against sinful humanity. In fact, a large proportion of the Bible speaks about God's judgements, and only a small proportion speaks about God's mercy and love. Let us be clear that God's judgements are as important as His love and grace in God's Plan to save all people.

If God is Sovereign, and He is, then He is also responsible for all evil. The Bible does not deny that God is responsible for all evil. But of course, this does not make Him an evil God because God is Love and He, Himself, never sins. God is responsible for all evil, but He makes us accountable for our sins. Accountability brings God's judgement, but His judgement flows out of His love and ultimately it is designed to bring Righteousness and Salvation for all through the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.

The whole of God's Plan of Salvation for all is wrapped up in 1 Corinthians 15:22-23 "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive, but each one in his own order." God has purposed that the gateway to Life in Christ is through 'death in Adam'. Many Universalists fail to understand the importance of the 'death in Adam' part of God's Plan to save all people. Each person's 'old Adamic, fallen sinful man' must first be judged by God and die before he can receive the free gift of Life in Christ. We have covered this subject in detail in Chapter 12 'The Great White Throne Judgement'.
