10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens (singular heaven) will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11
Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens (singular heaven) will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens (singular heaven) and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
For unbelievers, the Day of the Lord, which is the Day of Judgement will come like a thief in the night when they are suddenly 'woken up' out their 'sleep' at the Second Resurrection to face the Great White Throne Judgement.
On the Day of Judgement, the earth with its heaven, the earth's atmosphere, will become a ball of fire. The whole earth will become the Lake of Fire as the elements melt with fervent heat, and the earth's atmosphere will become full of intensely hot, white flames, arising from the molten surface of the earth, resembling the burning sun. All unbelievers, in their resurrected immortal but yet unsaved bodies, will be confined to the Lake of Fire and it is there that they will be judged and refined by God's Consuming Fire.
