The correct way to understand Matthew 3:5-6, in the context given, is to see that people went out from Jerusalem, all parts of Judea and all the region around the Jordan to John the Baptist and were baptised by him. Exactly how many of these people who went out and were also baptised is not given. A better translation is given in the NIV as follows:
