behaviour in purely secular terms, when what is required is a much more subtle demonstration of the interaction of religious energies with the social and political needs of the diaspora in the varied environments in which it found a home. The Catholic Church was quite the most striking legacy of the Irish emigration to the United States and the British empire, and while other Catholics also made their contribution to the church's growth, the nineteenth-century Irish determined much in its shape and structure to the present day.
