Is this a command to the church or a commission as so many believe

Many Christians in the contemporary church do not properly understand that what Jesus teaches here applies to every professing Christian who is not doing the work of God's word. It does not apply to those outside the church. It applies to those inside the church who profess to love Christ but do not obey His commandments. They will forfeit their salvation. We cannot play down this meaning because this is what is taught throughout the New Testament (CP Mt 12 30 Jn 15 5-6, 10 Ro 2 7-11, 13 Ga 6 7-8 Jas 1 22-25 2 14-26). Let us find out now what value God has put on souls going to hell (CP Jn 12 23-26 1Pe 3 18). The life of our Lord Jesus Christ is the value God has put on souls going to hell - His life for their life (CP Jn 3 14-18). This was the purpose of the cross. Jesus said if I be lifted up from the earth I will draw all men unto me (CP Jn 12 32-33). Once we fully appreciate that Christ died for all sinners, not only us who are saved, and that there are countless lost souls going...

The Christian Calling Winning Souls To Christ

The most important part of our Christian walk, as Jesus means it to be. Everything else in the life of the Church is simply a consequence of winning souls to Christ. It is an urgent matter. Jesus and Paul both taught the urgency in getting souls saved (CP Lu 9 59-60). Jesus is not being insensitive to the propriety of funerals here, but is teaching against procrastination - deferring or putting off taking the gospel out into the world and winning souls to Christ (CP Jn 4 34-38). Here again Jesus warns us against putting off taking the gospel out into a world of sinners waiting to be saved (CP Jn 9 4 with Jude 21-23). Day in Jn 9 4 signifies life and night signifies death. Believers are to take the gospel out now because soon it will be too late (CP 2Cor 6 2). Now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation (CP 2Ti 4 2). Paul's command to Timothy here is for our admonition too. It teaches us that we must be in a constant state of readiness to win souls to Christ whether we...

The Vicissitudes of the Twentieth Century

As was mentioned earlier, the twentieth century began with attacks on the translation of the New Testament into modern Greek and the official, albeit incomprehensible, prescription of the Greek state to be itself in control of the integrity of the text. Even the new and all-powerful star of Greek politics, Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936), was unable to introduce any reforms. During the tragic decade 1912-22 Venizelos found himself victim to his indecision and procrastination. Whereas he had the mandate with his absolute majority in 1910-11 to introduce constitutional changes, he opted for

Three Ways to Offend the Spirit

The second group which is so vulnerable to this sin reaches the same state of rejection by a different route. They really want to be saved and will tell anyone that it is their primary future priority to get right with God. Unfortunately, this class keeps waiting for that opportune time to step out into the path of total surrender. With all good intention, they allow the golden moments to slip by them until their wills have been paralyzed by indecision. Such people still talk about following Christ all the way, but their ability to act has been destroyed by procrastination. At last they linger too long and pass the point of no return.

Lordship Of Jesus

Here we have three seemingly sincere candidates for salvation but all failed to measure up to the standards Jesus has set for His followers. These passages teach above all else that anything less than total commitment to God eliminates one from the kingdom of heaven. The first incident teaches that an emotional enthusiasm that has not considered the cost of abandoning material security to follow Him is insufficient by Christ's standards. The second teaches that loyalty to Christ must take precedence over all other loyalties. Following after Jesus must be our highest priority. Jesus is not being insensitive to the propriety of funerals here, but is teaching against procrastination - putting off the work of God. Followers of Christ have the urgent task of proclaiming the life that is in Him to them that are lost. This is more important work than burying spiritually dead people who have physically died. Jesus said let their own spiritually dead bury them. The third incident teaches that...

Argument I

We are no better off with the stars in the heavens spelling out GOD EXISTS than with their spelling out PROCRASTINATION DRINKS MELANCHOLY. We know that something has shaken our world if GOD EXISTS appeared in the heavens , but we know not what we know - or think we know, how could we tell which it was in such a circumstance - that we heard a voice coming out of the sky and we know - or again think that we know - that the stars rearranged themselves right before our eyes and on several occasions to spell out GOD EXISTS. But are we wiser by observing this about what God refers to or what a pure disembodied spirit transcendent to the universe is or could be At most we might think that maybe those religious people have something - something we know not what - going for them. But we also might think it was some kind of big trick or some mass delusion. The point is that we wouldn't know what to think. (Nielsen 2004, p. 279)

Reply to Argument I

Consider, again, Nielsen's claim that God exists is akin to procrastination drinks melancholy. Unless we charitably interpret the latter as a poetic report that, say, the tendency to delay projects promotes melancholy (which seems to hold in my case, on occasion), the latter report is profoundly different from the former. People and animals drink, but not tendencies or states of character. I suggest that the second phrase is meaningless, but the first expresses a proposition which may, in fact, be true and so ought to arouse our interest in its truth. If we have some reason to think human consciousness may not be physical and this opens up the question of whether there may be a nonphysical divine agent, then asking about (human or divine) causes of events is vital. A strict behaviorist who denies the possibility of any mental events may urge us to put to one side any search for a mental cause for my writing this sentence. But once strict behaviorism is put to one side, the search for...
