Also called penance or confession, reconciliation is another sacrament that is shared by Catholic and Orthodox Christians. This is the sacrament of divine mercy, in which God's forgiving love is freely offered to any baptized person who seeks it, regardless of their sins. Both traditions believe that an individual's sins affect the whole church and that God's forgiveness is also offered through the church. The person who seeks God's forgiveness in this sacrament confesses his or her sins to a priest and expresses a sincere sorrow for having sinned and a willingness to refrain from future sin.
