Spirit who proceeds from the Father

'Yea, we believe in the Holy Spirit, Lord who gives life, who proceeds from the Father.' By adhering to the original form of the Nicene Creed, the Coptic Church, along with others in the East (Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian), rejects the development that took place in the Latin Church. The Coptic Church does not accept the double procession of the Spirit from Father and Son (the filioque clause of the Latin Church). A fourteenth-century textbook of Coptic theology (Yuhanna Ibn Saba, 'Precious Pearl') explains this creedal statement: 'The Holy Spirit, life of the Father and the Son, proceeds from the Father . . . that is to say, proceeds from the Father in order to go to the Son without leaving either Father or Son.'
