The same image on a vestment or on the church wall may look identical if reproduced in a book, but on location it takes on a different colouring in each different context. Along with all the rich imagery and profound theological ideas that Byzantine art derived from the liturgy, it also learned how to move in and out of time, and how to play with context so as to enrich itself constantly with new levels of meaning.
