1. A. "[Then Esau said, 'Let us journey on our way, and I will go before you.'] But Jacob said to him, 'My lord knows [that the children are frail, and that the flocks and herds giving suck are a care to me; and if they are overdriven for one day, all the flocks will die. Let my lord pass on before his servant, and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle which are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir']" (Gen. 33:12-14):

B. Said R. Berekhiah, " 'My lord knows that the children are frail' refers to Moses and Aaron.

C. "'. . . and that the flocks and herds giving suck are a care to me' speaks of Israel: 'And you, my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men'(Ez. 34:31)."

D. R. Huna in the name of R. Aha: "If it were not for the tender mercies of the Holy One, blessed be he, 'and if they are overdriven for one day, all the flocks will die' in the time of Hadrian."

E. R. Berekhiah in the name of R. Levi: " 'My lord knows that the children are frail' speaks of David and Solomon.

F. "'. . . the flocks and herds' refer to Israel: 'And you, my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men' (Ez. 34:31)."

G. Said R. Huna in the name of R. Aha, "If it were not for the tender mercies of the Holy One, blessed be he,' 'and if they are overdriven for one day, all the flocks will die' in the time of Haman."
