fear of the serpent in the garden of the mind
Isaiah 58 compares our soul to the garden and we know from Genesis that the serpent was also in the garden. The top of the spinal cord is part of the reptilian brain. And we can see from the left hand illustration below that the spinal cord even looks like a serpent coming into the garden of the mind.
ISA 58:10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day: 11 And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

The amygdala also prompts releases of adrenaline and other hormones into the blood stream, thus stepping-up an avoider's response and disrupting the control of rational thought.
Some may say - we've long passed the activities of the outer court - why are we dwelling on the amygdala's and the reptilian brain's functions. Because, for many Christians, further work needs to be done in this area.
