bondage. They were not to be emancipated for almost 100 years. Those who bought their freedom or escaped to it were segregated. Richard Allen and Absalom Jones remember that it was in 1787, the year of the drafting of the Constitution, that they were displaced from pews to galleries in a Philadelphia church, an act that helped inspire them to found their own denominations. Blacks could form their own churches, and most of them were Baptist and Methodist, but they could not preach freedom or enjoy liberty.
