American writers have made much use of Europe's modern encounter with Islam, often seeing the possible cultural and religious transformation as a horrible warning for their own society. Some of these projections are much more plausible than others. But even if Europeans experienced a fairly benevolent transition to a multifaith society, that change would still have substantial consequences for the United States, and for the Atlantic alliance that has long been fundamental to American foreign policy. For ordinary citizens too, European religious developments offer important lessons about the nature of the great faiths and of the changing faces of Christianity.
