In 1916, Thomas Edward Lawrence, at 27 and an Arabic scholar, had been assigned to British military intelligence in Cairo, to sail to Jidda to seek an alliance with Sherif Hussein with the purpose of ending the unpopular pro-German Turkish occupation of the Middle East, while at the same time guarding the sea route to British India. Although Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom became one of the most popular 20th Century works on the Middle East in the English language, his official status was always that of a political intelligence officer, who in the end did deliver the Arabs to Great Britain.

The decline of British idealism is dated most readily from the time of the First World War. The shattering of late-Victorian and Edwardian optimism by the traumas of the war rendered anachronistic any account of steady historical progress. The frequency in the SA, which is composed primarily of more modern hymns, is higher, but it nevertheless lags significantly behind that of the German and Swedish hymnals. Compound time terminology is rare in the two English-language books. The AHB mentions seed-time once, and the SA speaks once of dreamtime. Timeless occurs twice in each of these two books. Moreover, in the AHB, ageless occurs twice, and age-long appears once. In the 624 hymns of the AHB, time occurs thirty-eight times, seven of which are in the plural. Age is mentioned a full forty-three times, and future appears nine times. In the SA, time appears twelve times, three in the plural. The terms age and future occur three times each. In all of the ninety-six or twenty-one passages that contain time terminology in the AHB and the SA, the use of future in the SA is, proportionally, at least four times as high as in the AHB. Reff is an associate professor in the Department of Comparative Studies at Ohio State University. He is an anthropologist and enth-nohistorian who has done research in northern Mexico, the American Southwest, Spain, and Portugal. He is the author of numerous articles on colonial Mexico in journals such as American Anthropologist, American Antiquity, and Ethnohistory. He is the author of Disease, Depopulation, and Culture Change in Northwestern New Spain, 1518-1764 (1991), and editor and co-translator (with Maureen Ahern and Richard Danford) of the first critical, English-language edition of Andres Perez de Ribas's History of the Triumphs of Our Holy Faith Amongst the Most Barbarous and Fierce Peoples of the New World (1999 1645 ).
