The previous topic, Idolatry in the Heart, is a special case of this one, unwillingness to obey. In any area where you are willing to obey what the Lord reveals to you, He will provide greater revelation. In any area you are not willing to obey, there will be a stumbling block, keeping you from gaining further wisdom and maturity. Let's look at this section from John chapter 7.
John 7:14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
In verse 14 you see Jesus teaching in the temple. Then in verse 15 some critics come along and saying in effect, how can he be teaching if he is not a trained scholar? The same critical attitude shows up in Acts 4 where the religious
Acts 4:13 when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
In verse 16 and 17 he answers them. We can paraphrase his answer like this. This teaching didn't just come from a man, but from the God who sent me. Those who are willing to obey him, [do his will], will know that the teaching is from God and not just from a man.
The reason here being that God will provide the witness of the Spirit to those who are willing and obedient, and that's how they will know it's true.
Then in verse 18, he contrasts those who promote themselves with those who are dead to self and only seek the glory of God. When you are completely dead to self, you will do more than have truth, it says you will be true.
