The Living God Fearful

"It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."— Heb.10:31

To fall into the hands of God, the living God, is as when (1 Sam. 5:6) "the hand of the Lord was heavy," and "the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines."

It denotes the judgments of God falling on the sinful. It is fearful to merit and receive those penalties. God has a merciful purpose in them, but they are often fearful to experience. We are always in God's hands, but we are said to "fall into" his hands when we suffer the consequences of sinful-ness. It is a fearful thng to merit and receive the results of wickedness, even though a beneficent purpose moulds them, just as an amputation is a fearful process to undergo, though it may save life and restore health.
